AUBURN – The city council gave first reading Monday to an ordinance that would allow fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Jenika Mullins said fireworks are already legal in Nebraska City, Falls City, Tecumseh and Rock Port, Mo.

Mullins: “Legalizing sales and use within city limits allows local businesses and the city itself to profit rather than having our residents spend their money in the neighboring jurisdictions.”

She said New Year’s Eve fireworks can have lasting benefits.

Mullins: “The people of Auburn are looking for community gatherings and cohesion. By having this, it will foster community pride and engagement.”

She said fireworks will keep residents in town, who would otherwise travel elsewhere for New Year’s Eve.

City Councilman Rick Janssen said he is opposed to extended the allowable fireworks usage to include New Year’s Eve.

Janssen: “I personally would just assume not have fireworks on New Years.”

A motion to change the proposed ordinance to allow sales of fireworks pursuant to state law and use in Auburn until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day passed on a 4-2 vote with Janssen and Councilman Brian Lavigne opposed.

The revised motion passed on first reading. It will be scheduled for two more readings.
