NEBRASKA CITY – Tom Farrell told city commissioners Monday that the Nebraska City Trails Committee has decided the next segment of the trail they will pursue would connect to the city center.

The committee intends to raise funds to build the trail from the recently-completed section along Orchard Drive to the softball complex north on 11th Street.

Farrell: “The grant applications we will be writing include First Corso to Fifth Avenue.”

He expects construction of the 10-foot wide segment on the west side of the street  to cost over $1 million.

A portion of the north 11th Street curb would be moved to narrow the street and make room for the trail.

Farrell: “It’s an overly wide street for use right now within the city. It’s expensive because we have to -- and that’s why we hire engineers -- JEO pointed out that you have to extend the throat of the streets and alleyways and driveways along that.”

He said the committee is also encouraging the city to add trail-ready sidewalks along Fourth Corso.

Farrell: “We have citizens that walk back and forth so we support safe sidewalks along Fourth Corso.”

He said the committee considered extending the trail north of Arbor Lodge for about a mile, but decided it was best at this time to connect the new section along 11th Street with the city center.
