PERU, NE - The Peru State volleyball team defeated Graceland in a five-set thriller Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats are now 6-9 overall and 1-2 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Yellowjackets are now 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the match went…
 
Allie Schneider (Humphrey) had the Bobcats on a roll early with a few aces and the help of a block assist from Kalyssa Fox (Casa Grande, Ariz.) and Elli Williams (Olathe, Kan.) to make the score 5-0 Bobcats.
 
Peru State had its lead out to 8-2 after a kill from Erison Vonderschmidt (Falls City) before Graceland's offense woke up. The Yellowjackets went on a 9-3 to tie the first set at 11 apiece.
 
The Bobcats and the Yellowjackets would trade points for the better part of the middle of the first set. Graceland then took a 21-19 lead after two aces from the Yellowjackets. The Bobcats were able to close the gap to one and two points but could not retie the set as they fell in the first set 25-22.
 
Peru Stater led early in the second set as they were up 10-5 before Graceland went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 12 forcing Peru State to call a timeout. In the middle of the second set the Bobcats had regained the lead at 16-15 after a kill from Vonderschmidt.
 
Graceland then went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead. Peru State then went on a 7-3 run to tie the set at 23-all. Contributing to the run were kills by Vonderschmidt, Allie Schneider and three aces in a row from Vonderschmidt to tie the second.
 
The Yellowjackets scored the final two points to win the second set 25-23. Allie Schneider again in the third set went on a long run serving as the Bobcats started the third set up 6-0. Four attack errors on the Yellowjackets and kills from Vonderschmidt and Fox aided the 6-0 start.
 
Graceland would cut the Peru State lead down to two trailing 10-8 after a setting error. The Bobcats then went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-9 lead in the middle of the third.
 
The Yellowjackets then went on a 8-2 run to tie the third set at 17 apiece. Peru State and Graceland went back-and-forth as it was tied 21-21 late. The Bobcats finished the third set on a 4-0 run to take set three 25-21.
 
Graceland held a 10-7 lead early in the fourth. Peru State cut the lead down to one trailing 11-10 after a kill from Williams. Graceland would get its lead out to six up 20-14 as it started to look dire for the Bobcats.
 
Peru State then clawed its way back into the fourth set as they were trailing 20-18. Graceland got its lead out to 23-20 before the Bobcats finished the fourth on a 6-1 run to force a fifth set winning 26-24.
Contributing to the run were kills from Vonderschmidt and an ace from Shealie Wiebers (Papillion).
 
Peru State was up 9-3 early in the fifth set after aces from Schneider and Vonderschmidt along with kills from Wiebers and Vonderschmidt. The Bobcats finished the game on a 6-2 run winning the set 15-5 and the match 3-2.
 
Vonderschmidt led the way in kills with 13, Williams finished with ten and Addison Schneider (Humphrey) had nine. Vonderschmidt led the way in aces with five, Allie Schneider had four and Wiebers had two.
 
Williams had a team-high three blocks. Allie Schneider finished with 41 assists. Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had 21 digs, Vonderschmidt finished with 18 and Allie Schneider finished with 12.
 
Peru State will hit the road  Tuesday, September 19, to face Grand View. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
