NEBRASKA CITY – The Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City is taking its advocacy for lifelong learning and reading to the great outdoors.

Librarians and local educators were among those gathered Tuesday to cut a ribbon at Steinhart Park, where the story “I Need a Hug” was presented in 20 panels spread along the pedestrian trail.

The library’s Amanda Winkler said the StoryWalk is created by purchasing a book, dismembering its pages and re-assembling them not with a binding, but along a strolling path.

Winkler: “We have an intro panel, but then the other stations are the whole story. We have the cover and the rest are actually the story, so each panel you go is another two-pages of the book.”

Sue Little of the library board said StoryWalk is a wonderful way to combine nature and reading.

Little: “It’s awesome. When we were here putting it up yesterday and people were walking by like, what is this? You know, all ages of people. Everybody can enjoy this. It’s wonderful.”

Winkler credited Library Assistant Director Louan Beard for the precise measuring and cutting needed to present the first story.

Winker: “It’s called I Need a Hug and it’s about a porcupine who needs a hug, so you’ll have to come see if the porcupine gets a hug in the end.”

Winkler: “Summer 2022 programming out here is going to be awesome.”
