NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City Fire and Rescue posted a tribute to volunteer EMT and firefighters Tiny Schmitz on its Facebook page.

Schmitz died July 9 at the age of 91.

He had served the department 32 years from 1962 to 1994. He was a member of the Nebraska City Fire Company No. 1 and was a charter member of the Nebraska City Rescue Squad.

He was an Army veterans who served in Korea. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and Nebraska City Utilities.

Military honors are planned at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

 

Firefighters announced the 2020 Harry Bischof Memorial Scholarship Winners. Recipients are Laura Stehlik, Madison Borns and Aubrey Bando. Pat Gude, the grandson of Nebraska City’s 12th fire chief, presented the scholarships.
