SHUBERT  - InvestorObserver says despite record-breaking overall Halloween spending, America’s ability to afford pumpkins had dropped to a 25-year low.

American’s purchasing power is up 18 percent since 2000, but wholesale pumpkin prices have doubled.

Pumpkin prices reached $20 per hundredweight this fall.

Richardson County 4-H is organizing a baking workshop All things Pumpkin at the Falls City Middle School from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 8. Registration due by Oct. 31.

THURSDAY, Oct. 30

The Halloween Egg Hunt is scheduled at Steinhart Park in Nebraska City from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Bring a flashlight and basket. There are two rounds for kids in fifth grade and down.

The Plattsmouth Library is hosting a costume swap. People can recycle old costumes and pick up a new one.

Arbor Day Farm is offering a fright-free adventure at its All Hallow’s Event through Saturday, Nov. 1.

 

The Spooky Hollow Trail through the Tree Adventure is decorated for the event with themed stations. An oversized spider greets trick-or-treaters, as well as the carnivorous garden and hay maze.

Friday, Oct. 31

HIAWATHA - The 111th annual Halloween Frolic is scheduled in Hiawatha, Kan., on Friday. The children’s costume contest is at at 1 p.m. the grand parade is at 7 p.m.

PLATTSMOUTH - Historic Downtown Plattsmouth Association and the Plattsmouth Public Library will host trick-or-treating starting at 4 p.m.

A costume contest is scheduled at 5 p.m. at the library.

NEBRASKA CITY- Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce is hosting Trail of Treats from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Central Avenue.

AUBURN - Auburn Chamber and Optimists are organizing Spook Fest on Friday, Oct. 31.

Events begin at 3:30 p.m. with downtown trick-or-treating. Face painting and pumpkin painting begin at 4 p.m. The costume contest is at the Eagles Club at 4:30 p.m.

SYRACUSE – The 9th annual Trunk or Treat is scheduled on Mohawk Street at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Luther League will provide hotdogs.

Repurposing pumpkins

Keep Cass County Beautiful is partnering with Hosanna Lutheran Church for pumpkin compost and repurposing. Collections begin Oct. 29 at the Hosanna Community Garden across from the high school.

Uncarved pumpkins will be used to feed animals at Safari Park and carved pumpkins will be composted at the community garden.

Pumpkins with paint or glitter are not accepted.
