AUBURN – The Auburn Board of Public Works agreed to seek a new auditor after the Nebraska State Auditor’s Office reported what it described as disturbing information regarding a company that performed the 2024 audit.

Hamilton Associates is no longer certified to submit audit reports the Nebraska State Auditor. The Auburn utility will seek a certified auditor for its 2025 audit.

A September letter says Hamilton Associates of Council Bluffs has not had a timely peer review. The Nebraska auditor says Paul Hamilton’s individual permit expired in 2024.

The letter says Hamilton Associates issued eight audit reports for Nebraska political subdivisions including the auburn Board of Public Works after its practice permit had lapsed.

In other action, the board declined temporary responsibility for Peru’s water and wastewater position at its Oct. 15 meeting.

Meeting minutes say Peru City Clerk Dennis Kirkpatrick and maintenance supervisor Donald Roberts proposed that the board take responsibility for the job until Williams becomes a certified operator.

The board offered to assist during emergencies but declined a temporary role as operator.
