Norfolk - Community members’ concerns about speed on a stretch of road heading into Norfolk have been heard by the city council in a unanimous vote.

The ordinance changes the posted 55 miles per hour to 40 on South 1st Street between Sherwood Road and Jackson Avenue. Norfolk Police Chief Brian Tighe says slowing down the speed of traffic will benefit pedestrians and bicyclists as the roadway lacks a shoulder or a sidewalk.

The new speed limit brings cohesiveness to the road, as north- and southbound lanes, which previously overlapped with different speeds, will now be set at the same speed of 40 miles an hour. Residents brought complaints to the city council's attention about the need to change the speed limit.

The council voted 7-0 to pass the speed change.
