Energy grant targets Falls City power outages

FALLS CITY - The Falls City City Council is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 7.
The agenda includes an $850,000 electric modernization grant, an agreement with Nebraska City Utilities to purchase parts for electric generation, fire department gear and a chickens ordinance.
Also on the agenda is the appointment of Doug Waller to the Southeast Nebraska Land Bank, declaring 1518 Stone St. a nuisance, and restricting parking on portions of Chase Street near 25th Street.
Olsson civil design manager Shayne Huxoll has recommended signage on East 35th and north McClean Street.
The plan would install a 40 mph speed limit and stop sign ahead signs on east 35th Street and 15 mph and 25 mph signs on McLean Street.

The Falls City Fire Department proposed the purchase of custom turnout gear at a cost of $24,850. The multi-layer bunker gear will be fitted for seven firefighters.
A proposed resolution says property at 1518 Stone St. has been inspected and determined to be in violating of city code because of an unsafe façade, broken windows and loose materials. City records says materials have already fallen onto the public sidewalk.
The ordinance would initiate a court action permitting the city to bring the property into compliance.
A 2018 fire damaged Potrillo’s Mexican Restaurant and surrounding buildings sustained smoke and water damage.

An outage prevent agreement is proposed between the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy and Environment and Falls City. To increase resiliency of the electric grid, the state will reimburse Falls City $584,524 and the city will match $265,000. The project includes 1,500 feet of underground cable and replace a 50-year-old plus wooden structure.
An interlocal agreement between Nebraska City Utilities and Falls City is also proposed.
The utilities will establish a cooperative framework for shared use of utility equipment and resources. A parts pool is proposed so the utilities can share parts for enterprise engines to improve service reliability.
