County supports streetscape renewal
Keep Nebraska City Beautiful takes east entrance as a project
NEBRASKA CITY – Otoe County commissioners approved $30,000 in matching funds to renew the streetscape at the East Fourth Corso entrance to Nebraska City.

Sally DuBois of Keep Nebraska City Beautiful said the organization adopted the area as a project two years ago and worked with the state regarding the right-of-way along the J. Sterling Morton Beltway. Signage or rock obstructions are not allowed, but the organization plans to rebuild the pergola.
A water hydrant has been established and the lights will shine again with a change of light bulbs.
DuBois said Grimm’s Gardens will maintain the new streetscape and plantings of native grasses and flowers for the next five years.
In 1995, Cargill Processed Meats assisted with the original Victorian Streetscape project, which was led by Nancy Hoch and the “Market the Beltway Committee.” The company helped plant 180 bushes, shrubs and trees. Roses, lilacs and spiraea were a focus.
Nebraska City received a roads department grant of $39,000 for the lighting and trellis near the Missouri River bridge entrance. Hoch said the Victorian theme showed that Nebraska City is proud of its origin and history. The original design featured five globe Victorian lights. Twelve pillars were erected with a metal mesh on top. The columns were intended to reflect the porticos at Arbor Lodge.
The 2025 county funds are from the keno fund.
