60th annual coin show could be its last

NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City Coin Club has scheduled its final coin show after 60 years dating back to spring of 1965.
The final coin show is at the Eagles Club from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 9. It features dealers from four states buying, selling and trading coins, currency, tokens and medals.

Nebraska City FCLA will serve refreshments.
The Nebraska City Coin Club was organized in harmony with the national association bylaws in July of 1963 at Ulbrick’s Café. A 1950 Jefferson nickel was to be sold to the club by Mrs. Helen Sharp of Humboldt and would be given to Mrs. Mary Ulbrick for providing provisions at meetings.
Nicholas Sharp of Humboldt was acting chairman with 18 prospective members. Membership dues were $2 a year.
Officers elected in August were Thomas Wolfe of Auburn, president; Rev. Willis Dewey, vice president; Rev. AJ Carrillo, secretary; Merlin Nincehelser, treasurer; and Charlene Chapin, secretary.
Thirty-two were enrolled as members.
September 1964
Officers were Ronald Chapin, Russell Moyer of Hamburg, Charlene Chapin and Veryl Chapin.
April 1964
The coin club sponsored a coin display at the Otoe County National Bank.
March of 1965
Mrs. Ron Chapin of the coin club presented the best of show plaque for an exhibit of French coins by Noros Freeman of Clarinda.
More than 750 people attended the two-day exhibition that featured 22 dealers. It was reported that one dealer paid $6,000 for a collection of 123 Indian head pennies.

Mary Ulbrick was first in U.S. coins and R.E. Greenwood of Glenwood was first in medals.
Nebraska City Mayor R.L. McKissick gave a brief address to welcome exhibitors. Roger Bassett of Syracuse was the exhibit chairman.
The Mills Fremont Coin Club presented the Nebraska City Coin Club with an award for "meritorious service to numismatics in this area" in 1966.
