Kidnapping pursuit ends in fatal accident
WATSON, Mo. - The Missouri Highway Patrol reports a fatality accident in Atchison County Sunday morning during a pursuit after a kidnapping call.
A Fremont County sheriff’s deputy was pursuing a KIA Sorento driven by a Bellevue man after a woman reported that she and her one-year-old child had been kidnapped in Nebraska. Authorities say the woman was dropped off at a hospital, but the suspect fled with the child in the KIA.
The KIA was being pursued by the Iowa State Patrol near the interstate’s Nebraska City exit and sheriff’s deputies attempted to intercept near Hamburg.
A Missouri Highway Patrol report says the KIA began traveling southbound in the northbound lane at a high rate of speed north of Watson.
The KIA struck a northbound Ford Focus driven by an 18-year-old man from Kearney, Mo.
A northbound truck and semi-trailer driven by 30-year-old man from Ontario, Canada swerved avoid the two vehicles but struck the sheriff's deputy's vehicle.
The driver of the KIA , an 18-year-old female passenger in the Ford Focus and the 19-year-old driver of the Focus were pronounced dead at the scene.
The KIA started on fire and a sheriff’s deputy rescued the one-year-old.
A sheriff’s deputy and the one-year-old were taken by ambulance to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg. An 18-year-old passenger in the Focus was taken by medical helicopter to Nebraska Medical Center.
A separate three-vehicle accident was reported on Interstate 29 in Atchison County, Mo., on Monday evening.
A Freightliner struck the rear of a Toyota Camry in the northbound passing lane, causing the Toyota to enter the driving lane where it was hit by a second truck and semi-trailer. The second Freightliner overturned onto the driver’s side. The Toyota came to rest on its wheels and the first truck came to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder.
The driver of the second Freightliner and the 79-year-old old driver of the Toyota were taken the Nemaha County Hospital for treatment of serious to minor injuries.
