NEBRASKA CITY – The air quality at Nebraska City Wednesday morning is in the moderate range, according to Airnow.gov.

Nebraska City firefighters report that calls started to come in around 3:30 a.m. regarding the smell of smoke.

Local firefighters are not issuing burn permits because of recent hazardous conditions for fire, but prescribed burns have been conducted in Iowa both north and east of Nebraska City.

The Nebraska City Public Schools are holding indoor recesses today and are waiting to see if the air quality improves before making a decision on athletic practices after school this afternoon.

The Nebraska City Airport is reporting visibility of 10 miles for most of the night, but that was reduced to less than a mile around 8 a.m. and improving slightly later in the day.

East winds are forecast to turn northeast later in the day.
