Downtown zoning would allow microbrewery

NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City City Council held public hearings on zoning and regulation changes that impact temporary vacation homes and breweries.
Building Inspector Keith Morrison said the city will be able to collect its hotel tax for services like Vrbo, which offers stand-alone vacation homes for rentals. Services like Airbnb also offers stand-alone rentals, but also shared spaces likes rooms or campsites.

Morrison proposes a zoning update to consider short-term rentals the same as a traditional bed and breakfast for hotel tax purposes.
He also proposes new definitions for microbrewery and distillery for producers of a maximum of 10,000 gallons per year.
Microbrewery would be added as an permitted use in the C-2 commercial district.
A change to the city’s sign ordinance is also proposed. Morrison said rather than limiting a business to three signs, the ordinance would limit signage to a percentage of the face of the building.
