Former Bible teacher sentenced for child abuse using social media
PLATTSMOUTH – A former Bible class teacher in Plattsmouth has been sentenced to four years in prison for unlawful intrusion and child abuse.
Jared Kobernat, 25, of Topeka, Kan., was sentenced to two years for child abuse, a consecutive year for unlawful intrusion and a fourth year for attempted unlawful intrusion. Kobernat was ordered to register as a sex offender in Nebraska.
A warrant affidavit says Omaha police searched Kobernat’s cell phone as part of a 2022 stalking investigation. The affidavit says Kobernat told investigators he had a practice of following beautiful women at shopping centers. Kobernat told investigators that he made up a fake Facebook page in an attempt to obtain photos.
The affidavit says police found 27,000 photographs of females from adolescence to middle age on his cell phone. Police turned the evidence over to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
A girl, who said she knew Kobernat since he was a sophomore at high school, received a message from a fake Facebook account that she believed was from another former classmate. The message asked her for help with an academic project about workout effects and she ended up sending embarrassing photos. When she said she would stop sending photos, she received a threat that the photos would be sent to her family and entire Facebook friends list. When the girl offered to call police, she began receiving messages from others requesting nude photos.
Investigators say some of the photos on the cell phone had been modified to include text banners and one claimed it was taken of a student in Plattsmouth.
The affidavit says photos of two females appear to have been taken at a Plattsmouth church, where Kobernat was formerly employed.
