NEBRASKA CITY – The mother of a 17-year-old boy who was fatally wounded from a gunshot at his Fourth Corso residence on Aug. 12 is charged in Otoe County Court with unlawful transfer of firearm to a juvenile.

Court records say police investigated the accidental shooting and seized a Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun.

Cheryl Howell, 53, of Nebraska City is accused of buying the handgun at Cabelas in LaVista and giving it to the teenager with instruction that he keep it away from other children.

Howell says she bought the handgun for herself and did not give or loan it to anyone.

In August, the Otoe County Attorney’s Office filed a petition against Howell alleging neglect for failing to provide proper supervision for children in her guardianship.

State law prohibits giving or loaning of a handgun to a juvenile.
