Falls City's RaeAnn Thompson looking to repeat at state meet
FALLS CITY - Falls City's RaeAnn Thompson doesn't lack for confidence these days. The junior sprinter is coming off a sophomore season that included gold medals at the state meet in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
When asked if she expected to repeat in 2022 she offered a kind smile and simple, one-word answer.
Thompson: "Yes."
Thompson also has a chance to win state in the long jump, which is another event she competes in this season. But first, Thompson says she has work to do in one race in particular.
Thompson: "I think I have a lot more room to improve for my 200 [meter dash]."
As for the 100-meter dash, Thompson thinks she is "good" and is ready to defend her title. The sprinter said she has been working hard in practice to prepare and is working on finishing races strong instead of coasting at the end.
With the stellar sophomore campaign. Thompson now has a target on her back this season. Every time she competes she knows she is going to see the best competition from other runners. Being a returning champion can add a lot of pressure and Thompson said she does feel pressure heading into districts and state.
But not from who you would expect.
Thompson: "Yes. Yes from my mom."
For now, Thompson is continuing to run and prepare for the chance to defend her 2021 championships. The state meet is set to begin May 18 at Omaha Burke.
