Nebraska City - It was opening day for spring sports in Nebraska and the Nebraska City Pioneer Varsity baseball team kicked off their 2022 spring season at home.  The Pioneers would host Mt Michael Benedictine and drop the home opener 9-2 to the Knights.    
 
The Pioneers would be the first team to get on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning after a 2 out double by Sloan Pelican where courtesy runner Nolan Beccard would advance to third on a wild pitch and then score on a dropped third strike on batter Colton Snyder.  
 
Mt Michael responded in the top of the 2nd inning on a single by Kaden Becker and an RBI groundout by Eric Kaps.  Mt Michael would be held scoreless until the top of the 4th when they would score 3 runs on a 2 RBI double by Kaps and an error on the Pioneers to take a 5-1 lead.  
 
In the top of the 5th, Hayden Coyle would take over at pitcher for Pioneer starter Keston Holman and would give up a solo home run to right field by Luke Broderick to make it 6-1.  Mt Michael would add 2 more runs in the top of the 6th inning on a Nate Buresh single and the second home run of the day for Broderick.  The Pioneers would get a run in the bottom of the 6th where Zach Tesarek would score on a balk, but that was the end of the scoring as the Knights would take the opening day matchup 9-2.
 
Keston Holman took the loss on the mound where he went 4 innings and gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits.  Hayden Coyle went 3 innings in relief and gave up 5 hits and 4 earned runs.  Luke Broderick got the win for the Knights by going 5 1/3 innings and giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits.  
 
Offensively for the Pioneers, they tallied 5 hits on the day led by Zach Tesarek who went 2 for 3 at the plate and would score a run.  The Pioneers also got a hits from Sloan Pelican, Cael Kreifel and Hayden Coyle.  
 
Nebraska City drops to 0-1 on the season and will be back in action at home on Friday against Blair in a game that will be threatened by impending rain and snow.  They will then hit the road on Monday, March 21st as they travel to Bennington, who defeated Blair 7-1 on Thursday.
