LINCOLN- With a chance to head to the Nebraska state championship on the line, one of the most electric players in Class B came up just short.

After advancing past Bennington in the quarterfinals 60-44, the four-seeded Platteview Trojans stood in front of a daunting opponent—the one-seeded Omaha Skutt Catholic Skyhawks.

The Trojans used a second half comeback against the Bennington Badgers in the quarterfinals to win by sixteen. After trailing by nine at the break, Platteview junior Connor Millikan scored 28 of his 35 in the second half and Platteview outscored the Badgers 43-18 in the second half.

The Skyhawks came into districts having lost its first game of the season to Omaha Roncalli 57-54 in overtime in the sub-dsitrict finals. Omaha Skutt Catholic must have had a chip on its shoulder, because the Skyhawks pelted Gering in the district round 83-28.

The opening round match-up for Omaha Skutt Catholic, the Blair Bears, yielded the same result. The one-seed cruised to a 62-36 victory.

At the state semifinals game, from the tip-off, the Omaha Skutt Catholic Skyhawks ran its brand of basketball. They went to the paint early and often with great looks from senior James Gninefou and junior Jacob Brack. Platteview answered back on the first few possessions with baskets from Millikan, but the Skyhawks seemingly had the answer for Millikan.

Millikan, who was guarded by Gninefou the entirety of the game, struggled in the first half. The 4/11 first half for the junior paved the way to an early hole for Platteview to try and dig out of.

The Omaha Skutt Catholic Skyhawks led 20-7 after the first quarter of play.

More of the same occurred in the second quarter. The Skyhawks were able to work their way into the lane and score, and the Platteview Trojans struggled to put up points. The Skyhawks led 37-13 at the break.

Omaha Skutt Catholic was led in scoring by Gninefou and Brack with 11, and junior JJ Ferrin with nine at the half. Platteview's Millikan was the leading scorer at halftime with 11 points for the Trojans.

In the second half, the Trojans warmed up from the floor. Millikan was able to get to the free-throw line more often, and junior Ezra Stewart helped out in the scoring column notching five points in the second half.

Ultimately, the Skyhawks lead was too much to overcome, and the four-seeded Platteview Trojans fell 67-42 to the Omaha Skutt Catholic Skyhawks.

Gninefou finished with 21 points, Ferrin with 19, and Brack with 17.

Millikan was the only Trojan in double figures with 20. Senior Michael Wiebelhaus finished with seven points.

Omaha Skutt Catholic advances and will await the winner of Omaha Roncalli and Beatrice.
