Auburn sexual assault suspect faces a minimum of 285 years in prison
Kanode charged with 19 counts of first degree sexual assault

AUBURN - An Auburn man faces a mandatory minimum tally of 285 years in prison if convicted of sexual assault charges filed against him in Nemaha County.
District Judge Julie Smith told 34-year-old Charles Kanode that each of the 19 counts against him carry a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison.
The charges allege sexual assaults against the same victim on various dates between March of 2019 and July of 2020.
An arrest affidavit says a seven-year-old was interviewed at Project Harmony in Omaha in December of 2020.
Judge Smith told Kanode that the mandatory minimum means if he is sentenced on one of the 19 counts, he will not be eligible for good time in prison for the first 15 years.
