YORK, Neb. — A man who failed to appear in court Tuesday morning was found hit by a train 30 minutes after scheduled court appearance.

Travis J. Stoltenberg, 44, was slated for a 9:00 a.m. status hearing in District Court in York for a case involving first-degree assault and third-degree sexual assault of a child. Stoltenberg was already a registered sex offender after being sentenced in 2001 for first-degree sexual assault in Cheyenne County.

An arrest warrant was issued for Stoltenberg shortly after the scheduled hearing time. At 9:30 a.m., the York County Sheriff’s Office and York Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a railroad crossing just west of York after reports of a collision between a train and a vehicle.

Stoltenberg was discovered dead at the scene.

Stoltenberg was facing an upcoming jury trial in York, but his case will now be closed. He was facing maximum sentence of 20 years to life on the first-degree assault charge and a potential sentence of 50 years to life for the third-degree sexual assault of a child charge.

If he had been convicted, he would have been facing a possible maximum sentence of 20 years to life for the first-degree assault charge and a maximum of five to 50 years for the third-degree sexual assault of a child charge.
