Sheriff Says Mohawk Street Radar Shows Syracuse Drivers Are Law Abiding
Sheriff warns about telephone scams

SYRACUSE – At the Syracuse City Council meeting Wednesday, Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill addressed Mohawk Street speeding complaints and warned of phone scams.
The council asked the sheriff in July about a speeding complaint in the area of the Ninth Street intersection. The sheriff said Wednesday that a deputy was stationed in that area for several days, at various times of day.
The sheriff's office recorded 184 vehicles of which 183 were traveling at the speed of 28 miles per hour or under.
With that information, the council chose not to move forward with the request from Frank and Phyllis Erkes for a placement of a stop sign at that intersection.
The sheriff also warned that there has been a scam appearing to be from the Otoe County Sheriff's Office’s phone number.
The scammers claim there is an arrest warrant out for the person and ask for money to clear it up. The sheriff said callers are also claiming that crimes are being committed using a person's Social Security number, so a payment must be sent to protect the Social Security number from further misuse.
Sheriff Caudill said any request from money is a red flag for a scam. He said the sheriff's office will never call anyone demanding money.
In other action, Eric Fass SVFD chief reported to the council on fire engine 736, which had failed a pump test last month. He said the engine has since been worked on and has passed the pump test.
