FALLS CITY - The Falls City City Council agreed to amend the city's redevelopment plan for the Falls City Mercantile expansion and voted to allow a live band and block party later this summer.

The city will add about a fifth of an acre to its redevelopment area for Falls City Mercantile project that includes construction of a 44 x 85-foot building to house a new freezer and cooler storage area, as well as a shipping dock.

The $980,000 project meets city redevelopment goals because it helps retain a local industry and allows for expansion.

The city proposes tax increment financing that is expected to provide $110,000 over 15 years.

The city council also granted its approval to Rebecca Wissman to hold a block party near Ninth and Stone streets on Aug. 1.

Mayor Shawna Bindle said Gov. Pete Ricketts' current directed health measure is set to expire May 31. She said public gatherings will have to comply with limits on the number of people included in any new DHMs.

While the city council has approved block parties in the past, this is the first to include a live band. The city council said the band will conclude at 10 p.m.

Wissman said her family had originally planned to rent the cabin at Stanton Lake for her daughter's graduation and came up with the block party idea after COVID-19 interrupted the graduation.
