Medica, a nonprofit insurance company, is giving 200 thousand dollars to nine nonprofits across Nebraska as the state battles the coronavirus.

"We exist for the benefit of our members," Medica Market Leader Patrick Bourne said. "We exist for the benefit of the folk we insure and we support the communities where our customers live."

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts thanked Medica for their contributions at his press conference Tuesday. The money will help organizations such as Foodbank of the Heatland, Nebraska Farm Bureau and health centers across the state.

"I want to thank Medica for stepping up and being one of those great corporate citizens that is recognizing the pandemic that we're in and helping Nebraskans out," Ricketts said.

One of the organizations being helped is Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. Their COO Betsy Vidlak says it will help them provide for the people staying at their shelters.

"Providing them some food resources and other supports while they're going through this time," Vidlak said. "Some of them may not be able to work or get enough hours, so we're looking at some ways to support them there."

Bourne says they are proud to support organizations doing so much for their communities.

"These are organizations that we've become familiar with over the last year," Bourne said. "We know them, and we know the great work that they do."

The help is very much appreciated.

"It's just wonderful to have organizations that say we know you're doing wonderful work and we just want to support you," Vidlak said. "That is just such a great feeling."
