DES MOINES - Upon discovery of the existence of substantial community spread of COVID-19 in the state, Gov. Kim Reynolds is recommending that Iowa schools close for four weeks.

Reynolds: “We know now that we have substantial community spread across our state, which takes us to the next level of response. Based on this new information, I am recommending that all Iowa schools close for the next four weeks to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Throughout this period we will continue to assess where we are as a state and determine if Iowa schools re-open or remain closed for an extended period of time.”

She said Iowa’s health department was notified of four additional positive cases of Iowans with COVID-19, for a total of 22 positive cases.

According to the public health department, two cases are related to international travel.

A middle-aged adult in Polk County indicates a third case of community spread.

Mass gatherings of 50 people or more are asked to postpone for the next eight weeks.
