Last Born In Falls City, Has Big Shoes To Fill
Community Medical Center discontinues baby delivery in November
FALLS CITY – Peter Marvin Scheitel has some big shoes to fill as the last baby ever born in Falls City.
The son of Trent and Samantha Scheitel was born Oct. 5, 2019, at Community Medical Center in Falls City.
The hospital had announced in June that due to demographic and economic reasons it would no longer deliver babies beginning in November, giving Master Scheitel the distinction of the last born in the home of famous war hero Bill Schock, aviation twins Douglas and David Brenner and artist Alice Cleaver.
Lloyd Hahn was born in Falls City in 1898. He went on to compete in the 1924 and 1938 Olympics. In the US Olympic trials he set a world record and his US team broke the world’s record in the 4 x 880 relay.
He finished his career as a running coach with Gil Dodds, a world-record holder in the mile, who is also from Falls City.
Artist Allan Tubach was born in Falls City in 1939. He worked as art director for the Omaha World-Herald and his series on Nebraska’s Platte River caught national attention. National Geographic magazine called him an artist “who explores the essence of life on the great American prairie.”
Nebraska’s 39th Governor, Dave Heineman, was born in Falls City on May 12, 1948.
A graduate of the US Military Academy and Army Ranger program, Heineman became governor in 2005.
Samantha is a local attorney and Trent is a vice president with Frontier Bank.
Hospital CEO Ryan Larsen said while the hospital no longer schedules deliveries, the hospital is alerted for unexpected births.
He said the decision to discontinue deliveries was not easy.
Larsen: "We have a hundred-year history of delivering babies, and our doctors and nurses have spent hundreds and thousands of hours in training to develop and maintain their obstetric skills."
CMC delivered 43 babies in 2018 and was on pace to deliver 44 this year.
