PLATTSMOUTH - This spring Plattsmouth, like many other communities along the Platte and Missouri Rivers, experienced record-high flood waters that left its water treatment plant and sewer treatment plant inoperable.

Without a functioning water plant, city officials felt it prudent to not fill the Twin Rivers Aquatic Park this summer, leaving many area children without their favorite activity.

For Plattsmouth native son Roger Schmidt, owner of Schmidt Liquid Trucking, and Rob Meisinger, owner of Fastgrass, the situation was unacceptable. The two men pooled their business resources and found a way to fill the pool as a break from the harsh times left by the flood waters.

Mayor Paul Lambert: “Roger Schmidt, knowing the value of Twin Rivers to his children as they grew up, decided to do something to make sure children and families did not lose their summer of swimming and fun.”

Within a few days, the pool was filled with water that met all the required specifications.

Lambert: “Using a Fastgrass well, OFC Schmidt Liquid Trucking employees filled 42 trucks with 270,000 gallons of water and kept it open through the summer. Because of their effort, 10,000 children and adults passed through Twin Rivers’ gates to enjoy a summer of fun in and on the water.”

To show the city’s appreciation of these two local businessmen, Lambert awarded them the “Pride of Plattsmouth” title on behalf of the city during the Oct. 21 council meeting. The mayor noted that Schmidt has always been supportive of his hometown, even though he doesn’t want or expect recognition for his contributions.

Lambert thanked Schmidt and Meisinger, who was unable to attend the meeting,  for their “commitment to the families of Plattsmouth and your never-ending extraordinary effort.”
