NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce announced the return of the Downtown Summer Movie Series and the Community Picnic with both events scheduled for the first weekend in June.

The movie series will begin Saturday, June 3 at the Sunken Parking Lot on Central Avenue with the showing of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. The events begin around dusk every Saturday with the last movie of the summer scheduled for July 29.

There will not be a showing on July 1 because of the Treestock Independence Day celebration.

Residents attending are encouraged to bring chairs for comfort and snacks can be acquired for a small fee on-site. Some of the other movies scheduled to play over the eight-week series are Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile and Top Gun: Maverick.

The fifth annual Community Picnic is the following day, Sunday, June 4 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Wildwood Park in Nebraska City and is open to all residents free of charge.

Patrons will receive a meal and will be treated to live music along with other family-friendly activities. The live musical entertainment features Jarana--a group that has performed at the picnic on multiple occasions.

Local grocery stores are donating sides and condiments while Cargill is providing brisket for sandwiches. Attendees are again encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, although there will be additional picnic tables throughout the park.

There is limited parking available so folks should plan on arriving early to avoid having to park further away from the event.

In case of rain, a make-up day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6.

“The Community Picnic is designed to pull together all our different cultural and social groups in
Nebraska City and celebrate our common ground,” said NCTC Executive Director Amy Allgood in a press release
. “This is our fifth year doing this and it just keeps growing.”
