LINCOLN - The Nebraska Legislature advanced an amendment to the Voter ID law that was approved by the public in last year’s election.

Sen. Julie Slama criticized the amendment and voted against it, but Sen. Tom Brewer said the more lenient provisions in the amendment are recommended by Secretary of State Bob Evnen.

Slama said constitutional questions in the amendment will cause a special session of the legislature because the body is obligated to fulfill the will of the people from the election.

In her Facebook post, Slama said she led a one-woman, eight-hour filibuster because LB 514 masquerades as Voter ID but lacks any real requirements to show an ID in order to vote. She said it is especially true with mail-in ballots.
