OMAHA, Neb. -- Authorities in Omaha have arrested a man in connection to a double homicide that happened in 2015.

The Omaha Police Department said they arrested 35-year-old Cavin Cooper for two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of use of a gun to commit a felony, and one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person for the 2015 murders of Diondre Mitchell and Lafayette Reed.

Officers were called to investigate a shooting May 5, 2015 around 4:40 a.m. in the 3200 block of N 28th St.

OPD said that officers found two unresponsive men, Mitchell and Reed, in the kitchen of the residence. Both men were declared dead at the scene.

"I hope the arrest in the double homicide from 2015 provides some closure for the families," Omaha Police Chief Todd Shmaderer. "Homicide cases, no matter how old, will always receive our greatest attention."

The OPD said that Cooper is currently incarcerated for first-degree assault, weapons charges, and habitual criminal charges related to a 2018 crime.
