NEBRASKA CITY - Area parks are offering first day hikes on Jan. 1.

Waubonsie State Park will host a guided- hike on the Backwoods Trail from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Hikers meet at the Wa-Shawtee Lodge three miles south of Highway 2 on Buff Road and a mile east. Friends of Waubonsie State Park will provide refreshments.

The Lewis & Clark Center at Nebraska City invites hikers for the 15-minute River Overlook, Birding or Limestone Bluff trails from dawn to dusk on Jan. 1.

Maps are available at the front door of the visitor center.

Nebraska Game and Parks lists First Day Hike events at outdoornebraska.gov.

They include Platte River State Park,  Verdon Lake State Recreation Area and Wagon Train State Recreation area Near Hickman.

The long-range forecast for New Year’s Day is a high of 42 and a low of 31 with winds under 10 mph.
