Hazel (Hurst) Cowles, age 82 of Indianola, IA, formerly of Sidney, IA died Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Azria Health Care Center in Clarinda, IA following a brief illness.  Hazel was born April 7, 1940 in Hamburg, IA to Ernest Elvin Hurst and Laura Mae (Watkins) Hurst.  She worked for many years in Nebraska City, NE at Pendleton Woolen Mills and a the American Meter Plant.

 

Hazel grew up listening and loving classic county music and the old church spirituals.  She was an avid reader and read everything she could on her favorite music and singers.  She had a vast knowledge of them all.  She loved crocheting and gardening.  And worked her butt off to provide a home for her kids.  Sometimes working as many as three jobs at once.  Her family was her everything.

 

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Lee Lewis; granddaughter, Amy Lewis Aniceto; 2 sisters, Lois Crecelius and Beulah Harris; and 3 brothers, Harvey, Harold and Glen Hurst.  She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Lewis of Clarinda, IA; son, Jeff Cowles and wife Brenda of Indianola, IA; 8 grandchildren: Jenna McIntyre and husband Doug, Cody Edwards, Casie Cowles, Lacey Jones and husband David, Khymber Fox and husband Ryan, Dillon King and Makayla Cowles, and Miyah Cowles; 8 great grandchildren: Haley Harp, Ollivia, Tegan, Elleott, Emberlynn, Rhea, Christopher, and Ramsay; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

 

There will be a Celebration of Life from 1:00 to 4:00 PM Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the Gathering Place in Sidney, IA.  Private disposition of ashes will be at another time and a Memorial Fund has been established. 

The Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA is in charge of arrangements.
