Peru State baseball splits with Morningside

(Peru, Neb.)—On Tuesday, April 19, the Peru State baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Morningside. The Bobcats are now 19-23 overall on the season while Morningside is 24-14.
Below is a breakdown of how each game went…
Game 1
Morningside with one out in the top of the first hit a single and then the next batter reached on an error and both runners advanced into scoring position. Then the Mustangs hit a two RBI single with two down in the first. Morningside scored their third run of the game from a second error in the inning. The Mustangs had three runs on two hits, two errors and one left one on.
William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a one out double in the bottom of the first inning. Then Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a single and Bradford came around to score for the 'Cats first run of the game. Then Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) reached on an error as the Bobcats had runners on first and second.
Jesus Tavares (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had a productive ground out as he moved both the runners into scoring position. A flyout ended the inning for the 'Cats. Peru State had one run on two hits, an error and left two on in the first.
In the top of second inning Morningside hit a one out single. The base runner would be out on a fielder's choice. The Mustangs scored their fourth run of the game from an error. Then a double and a single scored two more runs as the Mustang lead grew to five leading 6-1. Morningside scored three runs on three hits, an error and left two on.
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the second and then stole second to get into scoring position. Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a productive ground out bringing Adams into score. The Bobcats got another base runner as Johannes Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) drew a two out walk but the runner would be left stranded. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left one on as they trailed 6-2.
Morningside kept the hot bats going through the third as they hit a leadoff single. Then with one down a single scored the runner from second as the Mustangs were now leading 7-2. Morningside had one run on two hits and left no one on.
Bradford was hit by a pitch to start the home half of the third inning. Unfortunately, the 'Cats ran into some trouble with a double play and then a ground out ended the inning.
Morningside went three up three down in the fourth inning. Adams was hit by a pitch with one down in the fourth inning. The base runner would be bounced on a fielder's choice. Pavletich then doubled bringing in Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) for the 'Cats third run of the game. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left one on in the fourth.
The Mustangs hit a leadoff homerun in the top of the fifth inning. Then two walks had Morningside threatening again with runners on first and second. A double then scored two more runs for the Mustangs as they led 10-3.
Two more doubles with one out scored two more runs for Morningside. Morningside was able to draw a walk and then a fielder's choice had runners on first and third. The Mustangs had five runs on four hits and left two on.
Reynolds drew a leadoff walk in the home half of the fifth. Then a one out single from Solis had runners threatening on the corners. Doel Pina (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) came into pinch run for Solis. A Tavares double scored the fourth run of the game for the 'Cats.
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) reached on an error as Pina came into score to make it 12-5. Blake Denson (Broken Bow) came into pinch run for Andrades. Adams then drew a walk. A sac fly from Wright scored the sixth run of the game for the 'Cats.
Pavletich then hit a two RBI single as Peru State now only trailed Morningside by four. The Bobcats scored five runs on three hits an error and left two on.
Morningside with two down in the sixth was hit by a pitch and then a double scored the 13th run of the game for the Mustangs. Morningside had one run on one hit and left one on.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth, with two down in the top of the seventh Morningside hit a double and then they were hit by a pitch as they had runners on first and second. A walk loaded the bases. The 'Cats were able to get out of the bases loaded jam unscathed. Morningside had no runs on one hit and left three stranded.
Peru State went down in order in the final inning of the first game. Morningside defeated Peru State 13-8.
Jan Vargas (Juncos, P.R.) pitched three innings striking out one batter, giving up seven runs on seven hits-only one was earned. Hunter Abney (Union Star, Mo.) pitched 2.2 innings striking out three batters, giving up one run on two hits-one run was earned. Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched 1.1 innings striking out one batter and giving up five runs on four hits and all five were earned.
Pavletich led the way in hits and RBIs in game one as he had two hits and four RBIs.
Game 2
Morningside got a one out double in the top of the first, but the runner would later be caught stealing for the third out of the first inning. The Mustangs had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Denson drew a two out walk in the home half of the first inning. Then Diego Rivera (Carolina, P.R.) hit a single as the 'Cats threatened with runners on the corners. Adams came into pinch run for Rivera.
Adams then stole second and Denson came into score for the first run of the game. Adams advanced to third on a throwing error. Peru State scored one run on one hit, an error and left one on.
Morningside led the second inning off with a single. Then with two down the Mustangs hit another single as they threatened with runners on the corners. The 'Cats were able to get out of the inning with no harm done. The Mustangs had no runs on two hits and left two on.
Peru State was only able to muster a two out walk from Casey Steffens (Omaha) in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs with two down in the third were able to tie the game after they had runners on first and second from a single and walk, then a second single scored the run. Morningside scored one run on two hits and left two.
Booyens hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the third but then was bounced in a double play. Denson was able to draw a two out walk. The Bobcats had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Morningside hit a leadoff double in the top of the fourth. The base runner would be out in a fielder's choice. The Mustangs had no runs on one hit and left one on. Pavletich hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth. Then with two down Steffens singled for the 'Cats to take the lead as Pavletich hit the plate. The 'Cats now led 2-1. Peru State had one run on two hits and left one on.
Morningside was only able to get a one out single in the fifth. Wright singled with two outs in the home half of the fifth and he stole second to get in scoring position. Wright was left stranded as the 'Cats had no runs on one hit and left one on.
The Mustangs were hit by a pitch with one down in the sixth, but a double play ended any threat from Morningside. Pavletich drew a one out walk but a double play ended the bottom of the sixth.
Morningside went three up three down in the final inning. Peru State took game two 2-1 as they split the doubleheader.
Elijah Boersen (Cairo) pitched five innings striking out two batters, giving up one run on seven hits-the one run was earned. Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) pitched two innings and gave up no runs on no hits.
Booyens, Pavletich, Rivera, Steffens and Wright all tied for hits with one each. Steffens had the lone RBI on the day.
The Peru State baseball team is back on the road Thursday as they head to Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a pair of games starting at 4:00 p.m.
