NEBRASKA CITY – If Wednesday’s final inspection of the elevator is successful, the Veterans Memorial Building in Nebraska City will reach renovation benchmarks for Veterans Day this year and remain on pace for a grand opening on Veterans Day 2022.

In addition to new bathrooms and an elevator on every floor,  renovations to date include new windows, electrical upgrades and new heating and air conditioning.

Nebraska City commissioners approved change orders Monday to construct water for the kitchen and lighting in the downstairs banquet hall.

Community organizer Jim Kuhn said the next phase includes the upper roof in the vintage of 1929. He said new gutters and downspouts have been approved by the Nebraska Historical Society and the green roof tile will be preserved.

Also ahead are construction of the commercial kitchen and light and sound systems for the stage.
