HAMBURG - A groundbreaking for Hamburg’s Ditch 6 levee is scheduled at 11 a.m. today in the Highway 33 or North Street area.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is raising the three-mile levee and the Iowa Department of Transportation is raising two roads that go through the area.

A second levee is planned southwest of Interstate 29 to keep water from flooding the interstate highway.

Kimberly Lopes of the Corps Omaha District said this is the first time a Section 1176 authority has been used to raise the height of a federal levee. An additional eight feet will be added.
