FALLS CITY – Richardson County Clerk Mary Eickhoff announced Tuesday that  enough signatures have been verified to force a recall election of Humboldt Mayor Robert Mendenhall.

Eickhoff  has sent notice to the mayor and Humboldt City Council that a recall election must be held in conjunction with the general election on Nov. 3.

The clerk’s office examined 132 signatures and determined that 121 were valid registered voters. A total of 113 signatures were needed.

Humboldt businesswoman Mary White circulated petitions saying the mayor had lost confidence with voters.

Mayor Mendenhall is asking voters to allow him to complete the remaining two years on his term. He says the city’s finances have improved during his tenure and credited city hall staff for professionalism.

Mayor Mendenhall says the city could not make payroll on the day he took office, but has since improved. His initiative to raise cash for the city by selling ground designated for the airport was stopped by petition and his initiative to implement a city sales tax failed in the May primary by one vote.
