NEBRASKA CITY – Otoe County commissioners agreed Tuesday to burying a time capsule in the courthouse lawn to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

The America 250: Nebraska City committee told commissioners Andrews Monuments is assisting with a stone to cover a capsule about the size of a file box.

Lisa Walker of the committee said the capsule will be buried this spring and opened 50 years from now.

Walker: “Obviously we just want to put things that are meaningful today. Somebody threw out the idea of putting in a penny – that’s a great idea.”

Another suggestion was asking high school seniors to be involved so they open the time capsule as part of their 50-year class reunions.

Walker: “Again, we’re not going to plant any cars or anything like that, but just some meaningful documents, pictures, maybe some books, things that are meaningful. We’re going to ask for community input.”

She said the America 250: Nebraska City committee invites broad participation in the celebration that is expected to culminate on the Fourth of July.

Walker: “We’ve been putting our heads together to come up with all kinds of thoughts and ideas, but ultimately our group really wants other organizations and churches and schools to also participate and do events throughout this whole season.”

Commissioners said they would be delighted to have students participate in the capsule burial this spring.
