Angela E. Derks, 98, formerly Nebr. City
Angela E. Derks, age 98 formerly of rural Nebr. City, NE passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, NE.
Angela Elizabeth Derks was born on February 1, 1926 in Wathena, KS; the daughter of Albert L. and Elizabeth A. Schoenfelder. She grew up and attended school in Wathena, KS, graduating from Wathena High School with the Class of 1944. Angela then attended Nursing School in St. Joseph, MO.
Angela was united in marriage to Edward E. Derks on July 12, 1952 in Wathena, KS. The couple began their marriage in Oceanside CA, where Edward was stationed in the Marines. They moved to the midwest: lived in Missouri and Iowa, then settling in the Nebraska City area in 1961. Angela worked as an inpatient nurse, and as a private duty nurse, while being a loving and devoted wife and mother. She later worked at Family Prescription Store, Norman's Grocery Store and for the Nebraska Department of Social Services for 13 years. Angela's faith and family were her greatest loves including being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition, Angela was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Altar Society, Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters, Catholic Bible Study, Business Professional Women and the Paul Friendship Club. Angela enjoyed baking bread and pies, gardening, canning, sewing, crocheting, knitting, quilting, writing poetry and playing cards.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Laura L. Derks of New London, CT, Gregory Derks (Jodi) of Omaha, NE, Karen Rudebusch of Omaha, NE, Susan Schubert of Denver, CO, Jean Marie Derks of Grand Junction, CO, Edward F. Derks of Omaha, NE; son-in-law Joe Drozda of Bellwood, NE; 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister Patricia Pelot of Olathe, KS, two sisters-in-law: Virginia Derks of Lee Summit, MO and Carolyn Stoll of Stanberry, MO; other family and friends.
Angela was preceded in death by her husband Edward Derks on January 28, 2009; daughter Mary Jo Drozda on Dec. 6, 2013; infant daughter Theresa Ann Derks on Jan. 6, 1965; daughter-in-law Diane Derks on May 22, 2019; Brothers: Eugene, Cornelius, Wallace and Gregory; sisters: Eulalia Philipi, Dolores Dorsey, Esther Bauman, and Mary Ann Nold.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Paul) southwest of Nebraska City with Fr. Ronald Homes celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church followed by recitation of the rosary at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in her memory.
