Introducing the Pioneers' 2023 Hall of Fame

NEBRASKA CITY - On Oct. 13 not only did the Nebraska City Pioneers football team win against Syracuse Rockets but nine outstanding former Pioneer athletes were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The Porter family had five family members inducted to make it a family event. The Porter family is the only three-generation family to play football at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Grosvenor (Grove) Porter, Class of 1914 ( Posthumously), lettered in 3 sports - Football, Basketball, and Track. He played Football for the University of Nebraska as both offense and defense, as well as quarterback. The 1914 team went 7-0-1 and in 1915 went 8-0 winning the conference title. Grove was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1985, and his granddaughter, Julie Porter Eckholt, accepted his award.
J. Morton "Mort" Porter, class of 1943 ( Posthumously), lettered in 3 sports - football, basketball, and track. He lettered as an offensive guard for the University of Nebraska in 1943. From 1944-1946 he went on to the Navy but returned to play Husker football from 1946-1947. His daughter, Julie Porter Eckholt, accepted his award.
Grosvenor "Budge" Porter III, class of 1974, received 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He was 2X All-Conference in football, basketball, and track, All-State in football and track, and player of the week according to both Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star.
He received a Maximum NCAA Division 1 Scholarship to UNL in '74 and played UNL Football '74-'76. In the spring of '76, Budge came out of winter weights as the strongest defensive back in Husker history, at the time. During practice, he made a tackle that resulted in a catastrophic neck injury that ended his football career and resulted in paralysis. He says "Feeling blessed to be still alive today." He says his favorite memory of his athletic high school career is defeating #1 Fairbury on their homecoming night 24-12! He had an 85-yard touchdown return at the second half's opening. That game resulted in him having over 100 yards rushing and being named player of the week in the papers.
Jane (Porter) McLeavy, class of 1979, played volleyball, basketball, ran track, and received 11 varsity letters. She was All-Conference all sports, All-State in volleyball and track, All-Area basketball, and Southeast Nebraska All-Star Basketball game in '79. In track & field, she was all-class mile relay state champion. Jane's mile relay team and 4x200 relay still hold the school record set in '79. She also followed her athletic genes to UNL and was a member of the cheer squad '80-'83 and captain in '83.
Scott Porter, class of 1980, had nine varsity letters in football and basketball. He was also track All-Conference all sport and All-State football and track. In his junior year, he had 1,426 rushing yards. He still holds the track school record for discus set in 1980. Even though Porter was injured during his senior year, he got the maximum NCAA Division 1 scholarship to UNL in 1980 and played through 1984. Porter was a letter winner as fullback and academic All-Big Eight honorable mention in '83 and '84. His Husker team won 4 consecutive Big Eight titles and beat LSU to win the Sugar Bowl in '84.
Ron Poggemeyer, class of 1962 ( posthumously), was a 12x Letter winner for Football, Basketball, and Track. He was All-State and All-Conference in Basketball, and Omaha World-Herald Certificate of Merit- All-State Football. Football Nat'l High All-American Team '61, Football All-State '61, Football All-State '61, and Football Shrine Bowl '62. He got a full ride scholarship for Football and Basketball to UNL, Coach DeVaney asked him his Freshman year to choose between football and basketball so he chose football and went on to play from '63- until '66, and played in The Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Gotham Bowl, and Cotton Bowl twice.
Coach John Barton was a Teacher/Coach from 1965-1999. Coach Barton was also an accomplished athlete, earning 16 letters in Football, Basketball, Track, and Baseball for Essex, IA High School, and 3-year letterman for the Peru State Track team. He was Assistant Cross Country and Track coach to Ken Clark until '74 when he became the Head Coach. He took his track team to undefeated regular seasons in '83 and '84, Track and Field Class B State Champions in '85. He coached three "All Gold" state medal winners, he trained athletes who broke or tied every track record except the 100m dash.
Shane Adams, class 1993, was Class B 1600m State Champion '91 and '93, Track and Field 8x Class B State Medalist '90-'93, Cross Country 2x Class B State Medalist '90 and '91, as well as Wrestling Class B State Medalist '93. He was a Junior Olympic in '91 and carried the 1991 Olympic Torch through Nebraska City.
Jenny Gawart, class of 2005, was a Track and Field Class B Discus State Champion in '05, Track and Field Class B Shotput State Medalist 3rd place in '05, and Softball EMC All-Conference from '01-'04. She still currently holds 9 softball school records, 2005 Female Athlete of the Year and 2005 Girls Track Award. Gawart is a 4-year letter winner for Softball and Track, Heartland Community Award MVP, and 2005 All-Star Softball Game. Gawart also has two NAIA Softball National Championship Appearances.
