She was the oldest daughter of 10 children (she was number five of the ten), born on the kitchen table in the family home in Murray and lived there as a young child. Later, she moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska with her family where she attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1960. She married Lonwood Virgil Green in Omaha on June 21, 1963.  Lon later joined the Coast Guard and they spent time living in Washington state, Oregon, California, New York, Maine and Michigan.  Along the way, they had three children, Susan Lonell Green, John Iain Green and Aaron Matthew Green.  After living in Michigan, Nellie and Lon divorced and Nellie moved to Avoca, Nebraska with three children, a dog and a home on wheels in tow. They lived just outside of Avoca from 1979 until 1984, when they moved to Nebraska City.  In the year 2000, Nellie moved to Syracuse, Nebraska where she lived until 2017, when she went to live with her children until 2021 when she needed more consistent medical attention for her dementia.
