FALLS CITY – The Falls City City Council approved permits for two cows, horses and a mini-donkey following a public hearing on Monday.

Kylie Vollan of Verdon said lots near the railroad tracks on the northwest edge of the city have traditionally had pasture animals and council members noted there are six permits already in place for the area near 1701 Schoenheit St.

Neighbors Charlotte Gentry and Larry West opposed the permits. West said livestock does not belong in city limits and Gentry said the pasture lots do not have a water source and Vollan does not live at that location to take care of animals.

City Administrator Anthony Nussbaum said animal permits are available in the low density, residential zone.

The Vollan permit passed on a 6-2 vote with councilmen Joe Buckminster and Jim Wisdom dissenting.

The council also approved Falls City Chamber and Main Street recommendations for Lemonade Days  and Cobblestone Festival. Chamber Director and Councilwoman Amber Holle said Falls City is excited to have a carnival returning for the Cobblestone Festival.
