Nebraska City baseball bests Wahoo in 14 innings
It turns out that both teams would play what would amount to two games worth of baseball as the Pioneers would win an extra inning thriller 7-5 in 14 innings at the historic Sam Crawford field in Wahoo.
Wahoo, NE - Impending weather in southeast Nebraska put into question if the Nebraska City Pioneer baseball would even be able get their game in with the Wahoo Warriors. It turns out that both teams would play what would amount to two games worth of baseball as the Pioneers would win an extra inning thriller 7-5 in 14 innings at the historic Sam Crawford field in Wahoo.
Wahoo would be the first team to get on the board in the third inning as Trent Barry would score on a double steal after a Seth Williams strikeout to make the score 1-0 after 3 innings. Both teams would then go scoreless until the Pioneers would take a 2-1 lead on a 2 run error by Wahoo shortstop Brennen Tarzian in the top of the 5th. Wahoo would answer in the bottom of the 5th on a 2 RBI single by J--- Masek to take a 3-2 lead after 5 innings.
In the top of the 6th, the Pioneers would take back the lead on a Hayden Coyle bunt that would score Zach Hawley and then a Ryan Bohling sacrifice fly would score Bayler Poston. Once again, Wahoo would respond in the bottom of the 6th inning on an error that would score Alex Ohnoutka and a sacrifice fly by Williams that would score Barry to take a 5-4 lead after 6 complete.
The Pioneers would once again tie it up in the top of the 7th on a Keston Holman triple that would score Poston and that is how regulation would end and take us to extra innings. The game would then go scoreless until the top of the 14th inning when the Pioneers would score 2 runs on a Bayler Poston single and an then an error by Wahoo catcher Easton Cooper that would score Sloan Pelican. Reliever Zach Tesarek would get Owen Hancock to pop out to end the ballgame with runners at second and third to end the ballgame and give the Pioneers their third straight victory on the season.
Tesarek would earn the victory in relief by going 4 innings and giving up no runs on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. Starter Cael Kreifel went 4 1/3 innings giving up 3 ER on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts. Also in relief, Hayden Coyle went 5 2/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. Brennen Tarzian got the loss on the mound for Wahoo going 1 inning, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits.
Offensively for the Pioneers, Cael Kreifel, Keston Holman and Zac Hawley all had 2 hits apiece with Tesarek, Pelican, Colton Snyder and Poston each having 1 hit on the day.
Nebraska City advances to 3-4 on the season with the victory and are now on a 3 game winning streak with victories over Platte Valley, Auburn and Wahoo. The Pioneers will next be in action on Monday, April 4th at Seward in a JV/Varsity doubleheader. Varsity action will start at 4:30 PM.
