Waverly Wins Marching Band Competition At AppleJack Parade
Syracuse and Palmyra also win high school divisions
NEBRASKA CITY – After 16 years away, the Waverly High School won the marching band competition at the AppleJack Festival parade on Saturday.
Jennifer Reiser, Lauren Hartman and Elexis Rohlfs said winning the marching band competition is special.
Reiser: “We’re so proud of what we do and everytime we perform it’s just a great way to represent our school. “
Hartman: “Super passionate about everything.”
Band Director Brady Rohlfs had last been to the parade in 2005 with the Syracuse band and was happy to return so the freshman could take part.
Rohlfs: “We have two separate bands a freshman and a varsity band, so we combine them for parades and they learn the same routine. I thought they did a really nice job today, really came together well. They take a lot of pride in what they do and perform for me.”
The band played music from a show for the competitive marching season titled the “War Dance.”
Rohlfs said band does some marching maneuvers.
Rohlfs: “The chair step and the double-time chair step are difficult because they take a lot of extra energy and a lot of extra form because, if you’re going to do it, they can really be judged.”
Waverly outscored Blair 93.6 to 92.6.
I think the kids will take this to heart. A lot pride goes into it because they put a lot of work into getting here to do this. I think they are really going to enjoy the success and hopefully it will help launch them into the next competition.”
