Site chosen for America 250 time capsule
'Planting' scheduled April 22
NEBRASKA CITY - Otoe County commissioners helped identify a spot to plant the America 250: Nebraska City time capsule following Tuesday's meeting.
The America 250: Nebraska City Committee had suggested a spot on the northeast corner of the courthouse grounds, but a consensus arose Tuesday to use space on the northwest corner where the marker for the state's oldest government building is established.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles purchased a 30x30 foot parcel on the northeast corner in 2001, where the 10 Commandments monument sits. The Eagles, who presented the monument to Otoe County in May of 1961, agreed to the perpetual care of the monument.
The time capsule will be planted at 11 a.m. on April 22. Seniors at Nebraska City and Lourdes Central Catholic are invited to participate so that the capsule can be opened at their 50th class reunion.
Lisa Walker said the America 250: Nebraska City Committee invites broad participation in the celebration that is expected to culminate on the Fourth of July.
