OKLAHOMA CITY, Okl. - Cheering for Nebraska as an Iowan can be an uneasy alliance, but Pryce Sandfort’s record-breaking season for the Huskers has turned the tides a bit for a lot of people around the Waukee area.

One of them? David Combs. Sandfort's high school assistant basketball coach and golf coach. He and his family have cheered on Sandfort and the Huskers all year long and are in OKC this weekend.

“He says I ruined his golf game. Always gave me crap for that,” Combs said. “He kind of took basketball as a priority the last year I had him when the new school opened, but he always found ways to score and he’s a good player.”

Sandfort is an alum of Waukee Northwest High School and has had quite the first year with the Big Red. With 113 made three pointers, he now holds Nebraska’s school record.

Combs says he’s not surprised.

“Oh he’s such a worker and I’m really proud of him,” Combs said. “He’s always had the ability to score it and just a want to be a player. The opportunity presented itself and he’s ran with it. Been really cool to see him play with confidence and shoot it the way he has all year it’s been pretty fun to see it.”

Combs and his family went to one game this year, when Sandfort hit eight three pointers, to set another Husker Basketball record.

“It’s been fun, we saw him at one game when they played Penn State  at home so it was cool to see that,” Clayton Combs, David’s son, said.

Even years removed from his high school gym and golf courses, Sandfort continues to be a role model for future athletes in the area.

“People definitely know what he did at Northwest and what they established for the school with his senior group,” Combs said. “I think people recognize the impact he’s had and I think it’s a great person to look up to. Him and Cade Kellerman at Iowa State are two great people for the kids to look up to.”
