Crimestoppers encouraging people who know something to say something

NEBRASKA CITY - Jeff Lant of Nebraska City Crimestoppers stopped by the News Channel Nebraska newsroom to promote awareness about citizen action against crime.
Lant: “We’re an organization that cares about public safety and part of our goal in Crimestoppers is to help incentivize people that know something to say something.”
The organization recognizes that people may have reasons they don’t want to come forward with information, but also recognizes that people tend to care for their community.
Lant: “The number for Crimestoppers Nebraska City is 402-873-7496 and the way that process works is if you call in, you’ll leave a message. That message is received at the Nebraska City Police Department. It would typically be the secretary there that is going to hear that message. In terms of confidence, I’d say confidential is certainly an accurate statement.”
The message would be forwarded to an investigator, which is Capt. Lonnie Neeman, and he would follow up on the information.
The Crimestoppers board does not know the names of callers, but pays rewards through the police department.
Lant: “Within the last year Crimestoppers has sent out two rewards. One was a $2,500 reward and that was for information that helped lead to the arrest after an incident that was an attempted robbery at NP Mart. The other reward that was offered was related to the theft of cash at an ATM at Arbor Bank in Nebraska City.”
The Crime Stoppers received a $5,000 grant from the Nebraska City Community Foundation to replenish funds.
The board meets the first Tuesday of each month.
