NEBRASKA CITY – Police Chief Ben Murry told city commissioners Monday that the police department has reached its $81,000 goal for a second K9 unit.

The city expects to receive a dog from BlueStreak out of Jonesboro, Ark., this fall and Ofc. Jacob Stenka is planning to begin training with the yet unnamed dog to obtain certifications in narcotic detection, handler protection and tracking.

Chief Murry said business and community donations exceed $32,000, the Kimmel Foundation provided a $23,000 grant, and Mike and Chris Koslosky matched  $25,000.

The city has already obtained a patrol vehicle with K9 installations from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The K9 program is completely a donation-based program.
