RULO – The Rulo Fire Department will benefit from the inaugural Rulo River Quest scheduled Saturday, July 19.
Up to 30 boats are being registered for the 38-mile kayak and canoe race on the Missouri River. The race begins at 8 a.m. in heats of four boats or less. They depart from the Brownville Boat Ramp and conclude before 6:30 p.m. at Rulo.
Kraig Coonce of Rulo said Stacy Rasco spearheaded the NEMO 50 last year from Rulo to St. Joseph, Mo., and suggested the idea of holding a Rulo event to benefit the fire department.
Safety measures include lifejackets, whistles and safety boats. There will be check points at Indian Cave State Park by 12:30 p.m. and Thurnau Conservation near Craig, Mo., by 3 p.m.
Winners in nine different classes will be named.
The NEMO 50, a 54-mile kayak and canoe jaunt, is scheduled to start in Rulo with a maximum of 70 boats on Sept. 13.
