Auburn introduces backyard chicken rules

AUBURN - The Auburn City Council is expected to give second reading to a backyard chicken ordinance at its June 16 meeting.

Ordinance 09-25 will allowing the keeping of up to four hens, but no roosters or hens that have developed the rooster-like quality of crowing.

Chickens shall be kept in a well-ventilated coop that provides at least four square feet of floor area per chicken. Any chicken caught running at large by a code or law enforcement officer shall be disposed of.

Selling backyard eggs requires a Nebraska egg number from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

The ordinance was introduced at the May 12 meeting.
