TALMAGE – An Otoe County judge ordered a Talmage resident to clean up junk and garbage from her property a year ago and a neighbor says the latest extension is testing her patience.

Debra Burbee said there are houses in town that are persistently cluttered with garbage.

Burbee: “It’s just getting to be too much.”

The village petitioned the courts in April last spring regarding three properties. A district judge ordered a permanent injunction against a Carol Street residence in September, but Burbee said the garbage remains and the wind is blowing it through the town.

Burbee: “I’ve gone to the town secretary a couple of times. She says it’s been taken to court and the court keeps giving them another month.”

The spring winds means she frequently picks up litter blowing in the town and she worries warmer temperatures will mean odors and pests.

Burbee: “Another month is getting old.”

The village typically organizes a community clean up, including a free lunch at the community building, and a phone number to call if you need assistance hauling garbage.

Burbee said for whatever reason, some residents do not take advantage.

District Judge Julie Smith has scheduled a show cause hearing on March 24 regarding a motion by the village asking to hold the Carol Street resident in contempt of court.
